In one line
Hindsight is a Mac menu bar app that keeps the last seconds of a single window in memory, so one keystroke saves the moment you just watched go by.
In a paragraph
Hindsight brings instant replay, the feature console players know from ShadowPlay, to macOS, and scopes it to one window instead of the whole screen. It holds a rolling buffer of 15 seconds to 5 minutes in memory, hardware encoded and never written to disk, and a global shortcut writes the trailing seconds out as an .mp4 in under a second. Because the capture is one window, notifications and everything else on screen never enter the recording, and a window capture can take that app's audio alone. It is a one time purchase with no account and no subscription.
Facts
- Name: Hindsight. On the App Store, Hindsight: Instant Replay.
- Platform: macOS 14 or later.
- Price: $19.99, one time.
- Availability: in development. The direct download comes first, the Mac App Store listing after.
- Built with: ScreenCaptureKit for capture, VideoToolbox for hardware encoding, SwiftUI for the interface.
- Data: no account, no sync, no upload. Clips are files in a folder you choose.
What is different about it
- Window scoped capture, so your notifications are not in the buffer to begin with.
- Per app audio, so a game's sound records clean, or the whole system when the callouts matter.
- Passthrough remux rather than a re-encode, so a save finishes in under a second.
Logo files
The mark is a replay arc with a record dot. Please do not recolour it, stretch it, or set it on a busy background. On dark backgrounds use the mark in white; on light backgrounds use it in near black. The dot stays red.
Screenshots
Product screenshots and a demo capture go up with the release build, in the sizes the App Store listing uses. If you need a shot of something specific before then, ask and you will get it.
